Inland Branch Chatter
The Inland Branch ended off 2019 with two well-attended events.
The popular Concrete Quiz Night held in October was contested by 12 teams of four contestants each, comprising consulting engineers, laboratory, technical, ready mix, and admixture specialists, contractors and university students. These concrete lovers battled it out, answering questions based on content from the CSSA website (www.concretesociety.co.za), Fulton’s Concrete Technology 9th ed, and general knowledge questions.
A Halloween theme ensured that the vibe was ‘spooky’ right from the start with the participants all dressed up, blending in with the décor. Cheerful banter marked the whole evening. The best dressed team was presented with a prize.
Jaco du Plessis, Inland Branch committee member, acted as Quiz Master. Answer sheets were handed in after each category was finished, and committee members totalled the scores and acted as referees. A good mix of questions ensured exposure for the Society and concrete technology in general.
Good fun was had by all and networking and transfer of knowledge were key outcomes from the event. Tina Coetzee, Inland Branch chairperson, thanked all the entrants for their support and the committee for their hard work organising this event. A special thanks went to Go Consult who sponsored the beautiful concrete exposed Lumintech (glow in the dark) aggregate trophy and for the hampers sponsored by AfriSam and Doka.
Congratulations to the winning team, Whiskeypedia, from Go Consult, who handed their trophy to the runners-up “Cores & Cubes” a team of CSSA Board members and friends.
The best dressed person Nikeshnee Padiachey from UJ, also received a gift hamper.
The final event of the year was the successful Chairman’s Breakfast & Golf Day.
This event was hosted at the Randpark Golf course on the 15th of November 2019.
A delicious breakfast was served while guest speakers, Richard Tomes from AfriSam and economist David Metelerkamp from Industry Insight shared their experiences and insights with the audience.
The Concrete Achiever Award was presented to ex CEO John Sheath who enjoyed his last day with the CSSA attending this event. John has gone on well-deserved pension now and the Inland Branch wished him well.
The Chairman Award went to AfriSam for their loyal support to the CSSA and industry in all areas.
Participants in the golf day enjoyed a good (and in some cases successful) round of golf, culminating in the prizegiving and dinner at the end of the day.
The highlight of the evening was the Go Consult-sponsored trip to Conexpo-Con/Agg 2020 in Las Vegas won by Gerard Vermeulen for the closest to the pro golfer.
It was a challenging year, but we are looking ahead to fresh opportunities in 2020.
Our first event for 2020 will be the Site Visit to the ACSA Precinct Development at OR Tambo with Tiber Construction. A QTM on 9th April will have technical presentations marking the 10-year anniversary of the Soccer World Cup hosted in South Africa, titled ‘How to Build a Stadium – celebration 10 years later’.
We look forward to seeing our loyal members attending the Inland Branch events.
